Oil on canvas

This painting was recently completed using research I gathered in 2007 during my time in Italy from the RSA John Kinross Scholarship.  Although I spent most of my time in Florence, I found myself observing poorer areas of the country and was particularly interested in Pompeii and the towns surrounding Mount Vesuvius.  The tragic history of the area, the ancient ruins, the casts of the poor souls that perished there thousands of years ago and the aesthetic beauty of the area were all captivating.  However I was equally interested the present, the people who live there currently and the fact that the towns are so densly populated.  I learnt that there are probes in the volcano that will give a warning if an eruption is imminent, however it is common knowledge that if this were to happen, with the towns so heavily populated, a successful evacuation would be unlikely and history would repeat itself.

My painting "Vesuvius" is a scene from the outskirts of Pomeii, away from the ancient ruins, looking up towards the volcano that dominantly sits above everyone and everything.  I'm interested in time, history, people and environment.  With the constant visual reminder of the volcano, I found myself reflecting on all these themes, and especially the combination of the area's beauty and its threat.  I wanted to depict a scene that reflects the place as it is now, but with the reminder of its tragic history.

Acrylic on card

h: 18 w: 23 d: 1 (cms).

This small painting is one of many abstract drawings/paintings I made at a time when I felt I was reintroducing myself to painting after many years of not being in the position to paint regularly or on a large scale.  Prior to this frustratingly dry period, I had focused on representational painting, but after this I had the desire to make abstract and intuitive images. Mark making, form, colour and tone were imoprtant and I think it was a mental release for me (it still is).  The past ten years have been emotionally challenging.  As well as becoming a mother within that time, I have found myself going through anticipatory grief whilst becoming the full-time carer for my mother who has a degenerative neurological condition and my father with dementia.

"Freeze Thaw" is a metaphor for my erratic, stop-start relationship with many things throughout recent years, including my identity as an artist.

Central Market

Oil on paper and board

h: 79 w: 77 d: 2 (cms).

This painting was made in recent years in response to one of my favourite places in Florence, where I gathered reseach during my RSA John Kinross Scholaship in 2007.  Away from the historic attractions of the city, I enjoyed the atmosphere of the Central Market, which is a bustling hub for the locals.  It was a chance to practice interacting with people who didn't necessarily speak any English and shop in a way that felt very culturally removed from what knew.

I would sometimes go into the market building near closing time when it was quite empty of people, looking at the evidence of activity from that day.  Empty crates and shelves, cones on mopped floors and a quietness, were stark contrasts to what had been there an hour before, just to return to the noisy chaos the following day.

My abstracted painting of the fruit and veg department is a depiction of quite moments when I felt the market could breathe and recuperate for the next day.
